[edit] Information on John WhittinghillFrom Genforum.com post:
John was born in 1776 in Virginia. He was the son of Peter and Catherine (Gabhart) Whittinghill. In 1798, John was about 2 years old when his father and mother moved to Mercer Co. Kentucky. As a young man he married Elizabeth Cooper of Chester District, South Carolina. She was the daughter of Jacob and Rebecca (McKinney) Cooper Jr. The family history states that Elizabeth came to Kentucky in a wooden cart. During the trip, they stopped at an Indian camp. Elizabeth went into the Indian village where she was given milk and honey. She gave the Indians some whiskey in return. The Cooper family arrived in Mercer Co. Kentucky in 1807. The Whittinghill family were already there. John and Elizabeth were married there , and then moved to Ohio County, Kentucky. John and Elizabeth bought land in Trisler, Kentucky, just outside of Fordsville. Here is where they raised 9 children. John Whittinghill died on September 17, 1846 and is buried on his farm in the family cemetery. In his will, written in August 1845, he left his "Beloved wife Elizabeth, one black boy, Sheldon". This proves that the family owned slaves. The entire will can be read in following pages. The 1850 Kentucky Census for Ohio Co. shows Elizabeth Whittinghill living alone at the age of 66. She died on December 17, 1864 and was buried beside he husband, John. My link to the Whittinghill family is through their daughter Catherine, who married David Westerfield. There is a copy of the permission slip from John Whittinghill, for his daughter to marred David in following pages also. The original can be found at the court house in Hartford, Kentucky.
