Land Records in Saint Mary's County, Maryland

  • [Source: "Using Named Lands to extend Family Lines" by William S. Carley (NGSQ V81:3 Sep 1993)]
    • Wheatley's Chance - 272 acres patented 2 Oct 1680 [Provincial Land Office (Patents) 21:196]
    • Wheatley's Content - 297 acres patgented 27 Nov 1681 [Provincial Land Office (Patents) 21:359]
    • Wheatley's Meadows - 110 acres patented 27 Apr 1682 [Provincial Land Office (Patents) 21:409]
    • Batchelor's Comfort - 190 acres patented 1682 [Provincial Land Office (Patents) 21:408]
      • Positive identification of the sundry John Wheatleys of St. Mary's is complicated by other land documents. The name Batchelor's Comfort, appended to this 1782 tract of John (presumably John II), has a feminine counterpart. On 5 Apr 1682, 100 acres called Maiden's Lott were patented to one Winefred Horn; and on 4 Aug 1685 the land was transferred to her then husband, John Wheatley of Calvert County, Md. No connection has been found to date between John of Calvert and John II of St. Mary's. Maiden's Lott was some five miles, as the crow flies, from the nearest tract of John II or the land of John I. For the patents see Provincial Land Ofice (Patents) 21:405 and NS&B:371. For the land locations , see Russell R. Menard, "A Tract Map for St Marys County in 1705," Chronicles of St. Mary's 21(May 1973): 261-71 and appended maps.
    • Wheatley's Contentment - 150 acres by certificate of survey to John Wheatley, received dated 28 Mar 1707 [Provincial Land Office (Patents),IL#A:362 Md. State Archives]; conveyed by his heirs to William Greenwell, whose son and sole male heir, James Greenwell, received a patent to the land in 1743. [Provincial Land Office (Patents),E12:196]
