    John Van Meter was the son of Abraham Van Meter and his wife Ruth Hedges. John served as an ensign in the Yohogaia County Virginia Militia during the Revolutionary War, and later attained the rant of major. Me married first Rebecca and had six children. Rebecca and two of their children were killed by Indians in 1783. He married second Jemima Dunn Bukey and a had a daughter Sarah. He died in 1806, with his will recorded at Wellsburg, Brooke County, Virginia.
