John de Stanley, son and heir. He is said to have m. Mabel, daughter of Sir James Hawkset of Stourton Parva. [Complete Peerage XII/1:247]

The following post to SGM, 21 Aug 2000, by Henry Sutliff gives an alternative wife for John. I am treating her as the 1st wife and motherof William, with the traditional wife (Mabel Hawkset) as his 2nd wife and mother of Margaret.

"The House of Stanley" by Peter Edmund Stanley (Edinburgh: The PentlandPress, 1998) is the first family history of the Stanleys in a while.Although it is lavishly illustrated with charts, photographs anddrawings, it is also disappointing by its lack of an index and also bythe lack of more specific documentation than a generalized bibliography.

However, there is one generation which seems to differ from otheraccepted sources and is particularly intriguing by its claim. This wouldbe that of John Stanley/de Stanleigh (circa 1285-1346) of Stanleigh andStourton (Storeton). Sources such as Seacombe (_History of the House ofStanley_) and Foster (_Pedigrees of the County Families ofEngland:Lancashire_) give John's wife as Mabel/Mabella, daughter of SirJames Hausket of Stourton Parva. The author argues that this cannot be asfrom 1300-50 Stourton Parva was held by heirs of Sir Phillip de Bamville(grandfather of John) and that there was no family surnamed Hauskettassociated with Stourton Parva or Little Parva during this period.

The author further states that a Charter dated 13 Feb 1310 (no furtheridentification given) given at Sefton in Lancashire endows John with themanors of Stanleigh and Over Elkeston in Staffordshire to be held by thesaid John and his wife Emma. The witnesses were: Sir Robert de Lathom ofLathom and Knowsley, Sir Ralph Bykerstaffe (Sheriff of Lancashire), AlanNorris of Formby and Speke, Thomas de Osbaldeston, William Blundel andRoger de Haverburgh.

Stanley suggests Emma may have been a Molyneux because of the location ofthe Charter, but ultimately decides she was a daughter of Sir Robert deLathom, because when John Stanley's grandson Sir John Stanley marriedIsabel de Lathom in 1385, a papal dispensation was obtained owing to theprohibitive degree of consanguinity "third cousins once removed"(Ormerod).

I know this is of interest to Brice Clagett and John Steele Gordon, butthere may be others who have examined this more closely. Any comments areappreciated.

Best regards,

Henry Sutliff
