Capt. John Smith served as deputy to the General Assembly from Glocester in the years 1732, 1734, 1735, 1738, 1739, 1740, 1742 and 1744. At one time he was town treasurer. He was first mentioned as a captain in the militia from Providence in June 1730. After Glocester was set off from Providence he was listed as captain of the second company of militia in May 1734, and his name appears frequently thereafter. He was Justice of the Peace in May 1730.
