 According to several IGI records, he married Lucy Amanda Hopkins in 1844 and had children Daniel B. 1845; Harvey H. 1847; David 1849; Sarah J. 1852; Hester 1855; Nisah (or Nirah) 1859; and Robert S. 1863.
 In the 1850 census for Columbia Co., Wisconsin, there are listings for John 'Shanklin' 1821, Lucy 1824, Daniel B. 1845, Harry H. 1847; and David 1850.
 In the 1860 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, John Shankland is 38 Ohio; with Lucy 36 North Carolina; David B. 15 Indiana; Harvey H. 13 IN; David 11 IN; Sarah J. 8 IN; Hester 5 IN; Nirah 11 months IN. { }
 In the 1870 census for Middleport, po Watseka, Iroquois Co., Illinois, [Desery Wyatt/Myalt?] is 76 from Canada; with Julia 66 Canada; John Shankland is 48, sawyer from Ohio; with Sarah J. 18 IN; Hester A. 16 IN; Nisah A. 10 IN; and Robert S. 7 IL.
 In the 1880 census for Stillwell, Prairie Co., Arkansas, John Shankland is 58 Ohio (father Kentucky, mother Virginia); with daughters Sarah J. 28 IN and Nisah 20 IN -- both with father OH, mother Maryland -- and grandson Everett 3 born IL (father IL, mother IN).  In Tyler, Prairie Co., AR, David Shanklin is 30, laborer born Wisconsin (father OH, mother TN), with wife Debby 30; and brother Robert 18 born IL.  There are two Harvey Shanklands in Wyoming; and Daniel is a miner in Arizona (listed as convicted of manslaughter in 1891 in Arizona).
 In the 1900 census for Morris, Arkansas Co., Arkansas, Sarah Shankland 43, born July 1856 IL (father IL, mother TN) is listed as a servant in the Walter Meacham household. There is also a David Shankland in Revilee, Logan Co., Arkansas, carpenter born Oct 1849 in Wisconsin (father NC, mother TN) with daughters Maud 17, Minnie 14, and Mattie 8.
 In the 1910 census for Red Oak, Latimer Co., Oklahoma; David Shanklin is 60 from Wisconsin (parents Indiana), farmer, widowed; with daughters Maud 26, and Mattie 27 -- both born Arkansas (father WI, mother Alabama); grandchildren Gay Musgow [indexed as Musgrove] 5 and Ireland 4 -- both born Oklahoma (father OK, mother AR). I believe these were the children of his daughter Maud Shankland who married Aaron J. Musgrove.
