According to 'Descendants of William Shankland', James and Nancy had 5 children: Emily, 'MDU'; Columbus, 1847-1851; Cassandra; and Leroy, 1853. In the 1850 census for Steuben township, Warren Co., Indiana, 'James C. Shamblin' is a sawyer, age 28 from Ohio with $1,000. His wife Nancy is 21, from Kentucky. Their children are Columbus, 3; and Cassandra, 2 -- both born in Indiana. {p.23a} In the 1860 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, 'Jas. C. Shankland' is a carpenter, age 37 from Ohio. His wife Nancy is 31, born Kentucky. Their children are Cassandra C., 11; Saml., 9; and Deloss, 7; M. (Da?) 2 -- all born in Indiana ('Ia'). {p.185, Warren Co. Indiana USGenWeb, <www.rootsweb.com/census>} In the 1870 census for Iroquois Co., Illinois, Nancy Shanklin is 4-(?), born Kentucky, with $4,800 real estate and $620 personal. Her children are Samuel 19; Delose M. 17; M. D. M., male, 12 ; and Ada 9 -- all born Indiana. {p.457} "D. M. Shankland...was born in Warren county, Indiana in 1853. He is a son of J. C. Shankland, who died when our subject was fifteen years of age. The mother, who bore the maiden name of Nancy Stone, passed away in 1877. In their family were seven children, but only three are now living, namely: Samuel V.; Ada J., the wife of Curtis Franks; and D.
