Per a family history written by Mildred Schertz Nordstrom of Tiskilwa, Illinois, John came to America and liked it.. He wanted is mother to come over with the rest of her children. She was afraid to make the trip alone so he returned to France and brought the family over in 1846. They are said to have traveled to Chicago and in 1847 settled briefly in Waukegan Illinois before moving in 1852 to Tiskilwa in Bureau County Illinois. Brother Joseph was serving in the military and joined the family a bit later in 1847 in Waukegan. The birth date given above is supported by French civil birth records It is different from the birth date of 24-June-1820 presented by Mildred Schertz Nordstrom. He did go to California in 1849 for the California gold rush but returned to Illinois.
