He was married twice; first, to "Delia" [or possibly "Deliverance"] who died in 1849, who was the mother of his first four children [Adelia, Rebecca, Catherine and Mary Burton Ruland]. His first wife died prior to the 1850 Census, and John Ruland married a Catherine J. [perhaps the "Catherine Johnston" listed with John and his children or in the next house in the 1850 Census?]. The children of John Ruland's 2nd marriage with Catherine were Estelle Ruland, Edward "Edwin" Ruland, Charles W. Ruland, Anna B. "Annie" Ruland and Harriett Ruland.

John Ruland was a "Hotel Keeper" [Owner/Proprietor] as listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 U.S. Census Records. He managed hotels in Manhasset and Glen Cove in Queens County, New York.

He died on 24 February 1891 in Manhasset, Queens County, New York in an area that became Nassau County in 1898. His estate records in Queens County detail his children and grandchildren.
