Facts and Events
Manitoba Politician Answers a Very Sudden Call.
Morden, Man,, April 18.-- Death came with awful suddenness to J. H. Riddell, M.P.P., at 8.20 last night. He was apparently in the best of health all day and had been out driving until 7.15 p.m. He was sitting reading with his family in the dining room of his residence when his pipe dropped from his mouth, and he fell back in his chair, and, giving a few gasps, passed away. The news spread immediately. and the whole town is shocked at the suddenness of the event.
The sad event occurred at 8.20 last night. Deceased had been attending to business in his usual manner throughout the day, and in the afternoon drove to his farm about eight miles out in the country, returning home about half-past six. Surrounded by his family he had the evening meal, and was afterwards called upon by a friend who wished to see him on some business. They sat together talking in his library when, without a moments warning, Riddell fell off his chair in an apparent swoon.
Medical help was immediately summoned but proved at of no avail, and the stricken man breathed his last after a few minutes struggle.
For a good many years past deceased has been a sufferer from asthma, but it was not suspected that his heart was affected, and heart failure was doubtless the cause of death. Robert Riddell. veterinary surgeon, of Calgary, is a brother, and also James Riddell, of Calgary. Deceased had been a Morden resident for 27 years.
Note that John Ruddell (not Riddell) was not the brother of Robert and James, as indicated in the last paragraph above.
