Jack jumped from the running board of a Model T as it passed the gate of the older August Summach farm which was just north of Grandpa Fred Summach's farm yard. His overcoat caught on a door handle, throwing his head under the wheel. He died of his injuries. In later years, August's son Harvey Summach would tell of being told to remain in the house the evening of the accident.

Jack was engaged to Mary Yourt at the time of his death. She later married James (Jimmie) Smith.
