Personal History

John Pelham, first son of Nicholas Pelham (afterward a knight) by Anne, daughter of John Sackville,[4] was born in 1537.

John Pelham in a will dated 6 February 1559/60 was named as the oldest son and heir of Sir Nicholas Pelham of Laughton, Sussex, and was appointed sole executor of the will.[7]

John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth on 12 August 1573 at Rye, Sussex.[2]

John Pelham of Sandhurst, Sussex, married Judith, daughter of Oliver Baron Saint John of Bletso, Bedfordshire.

Death and Probate

John died and was buried by torchlight on the morning of 13 October 1580 in the parish of Holy Trinity Minories, city of London.[3] A monument was erected in the church to him and his son Oliver (who died in 1584),[6] but in 1888 it was moved to Stanmer Church, near Brighton, in Sussex.[5]

In his will dated 28 July, 22 Eliz. [1580],[1] Sir John Pelham of Laughton, Sussex, named his wife Judithe to be sole executrix, with oversight by his brother-in-law John St Johns, uncle Sir William Pelham, cousin Herberte Pelham, and brother Thomas Pelham. The will was proved on 15 November 1580, in London.

[1580], in 5 sheets of paper fastened with a label where upon he set his seal of arms; sole exix. wife Judithe, overseers brother-in-law John St Johns, uncle Sr William Pelham knight, cousin Herberte Pelham, brother Thomas Pelham; no witnesses named. Names only one child, Oliver Pelham his heir. Proved 15 Nov. 1580, London.
