John Parrill's Will and Codicil (signed 7th June 1828)

Will of John Parrill:

In the name of God Amen.

I, John Parrill, of the state of Ohio, Ross County, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed by Almighty God for the same, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form, following, that is to say;

First, I give and devise to my beloved wife, Christian Parrill, during her natural life widowhood my whole plantation I now live on containing 179 acres, together with the dwelling and out houses belonging to said farm. I also bequeath to her such part of the kitchen and household furniture, farming utensils and stock of every description as shall be thought sufficient for the support of herself and children that is under her immediate direction, to be laid off by two men, one chosen by herself and the other chosen by my executor, and provided they disagree for them to choose a third man, hoping at the same time that the property so laid off and bequeathed be made use of to the best advantage for the support and education of the children under age or under her immediate direction or command and after the death of my beloved wife, I wish and desire my said lands and personal property above bequeathed or the balance that will remain of it and all the rest and residue of my estate of what nature, kind or quality so ever to be sold to the best advantage and after all my debts is paid the balance to be divided among my children share for share alike, to wit, my daughters Nancy Hunt and Catharin Montgomery, my sons John and Enoch, my daughters Leah, Matilda, Priscilla and Rachel, my sons Jeptha and Silas, and my daughter Mahala taking into consideration what some statement will be found in my account books, That I would wish to stand against them as so much of their part of the estate received by them.

I thereby appoint Joseph John Martin and my son John Parrill executor of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills made by me. In witness whereof I have here unto set hand and seal this 29th day of July 1813.

Signed sealed published and declared by the above name of John Parrill to be his last will and testament in presence of the testator.

Codicil to Will:

A Codicil to the last will and testament of John Parrill, be it known to all man by these presents that I, John Parrill of Pike County and state of Ohio have made and declared my last will and testament in writing bearing date 29th July 1813. I, the same John Parrill by the present codicil do satisfy and conform my last will and testament and statement and do in order to make my two younger sons Jeptha and Silas equal in interest in my said will with my two eldest sons John and Enoch for whom I have already paid two hundred dollars each which is to be considered as part of their legacies mentioned in my said will and testament. Grant to my before mentioned sons Jeptha and Silas the privelage of taking one hundred acres of land which I now own on Deer Creek in lieu of the two hundred I have paid my two sons John and Enoch and if they think proper not so to do it is my will that this said one hundred acres of land be sold with my home place and other property and the price disposed of as directed by my said last will and testament and my will is that this codicil be a part and parcel of my last will and testament and that all things therein contained were so set down and declared in my said last will and testament.

Witness my hand this 7th day of June 1828
