John Moles was baptised on 22nd May 1725 at Newnham in Hertfordshire, son of Elizabeth Moles, formerly Bly, and her husband Jonathan Moles, who was the parish clerk of Newnham.

In 1749, aged 24, John was married at Hinxworth to a Mary Syrus. John's sister Susan had married a William Syrus from Hinxworth just a few weeks earlier - perhaps Mary and William Syrus were siblings.

John settled in Hinxworth with Mary and they had five children between 1750 and 1760, although three of their children died as babies. John died in 1762, aged 37, being buried at Hinxworth on 9th June 1762. Mary remarried a couple of years later.
