In 1841 John worked as a teacher at Boughton, Cheshire (census). In 1851 Sophia M. Knott (1823 Aberdeen) visited brother Lavernor Knott (1817 Aberdeen) at Glasgow (census). Sophia and Tavener Knott (b. 1816) were children of John Knott (b. 1754, music master) and Sophia Pelham (P. Stubbs). Taverner Knott, artist, is mentioned in Gladstone’s diaries (web). John’s family moved to Edinburgh in 1826 and he became a portraitist and later a successful photographer; he photographed Gladstone and R. L. Stevenson. In the 1881 Census he was a master photographer, resident at 40 Greenhill Gdns, Edinburgh.
