John resided at the family homestead most of his life. In 1795, just prior to his death, he moved to the Philadelphia turnpike, on the Pequea Creek, about 8 miles from Lancaster. He erected a brick residence. Mrs. Dale (Leah Lightner) lived here after her husband died.

John served a little time in the Revolutionary war.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church at New Holland and was a man much respected.
