There are two stories of how Marion Holt was shot to death: 1) He was standing on the front porch of his house when Union soldiers came up and shot him (soldiers who were part of Sherman's march to the sea and were burning Atlanta), and 2) he was shot by a man having an affair with his wife. The rest of the story as written doesn't make much sense grammatically, but it seems Marion also shot a woman with whom he was having an affair. The storyteller claims the reasons for this are a mystery. His death left all four children without a father at young ages.
