Facts and Events
He was a man of standing and influence, was appointed a deacon in the church Sept. 13, 1790, during the ministry of Mr. Whitney. At a subsequent period, while Mr. Tolman was minister, the deacon became dissatisfied with the doctrines of Mr. Tolman, which were of a severe Calvinian stamp, and utterly at variance with the Arminiam faith, which had become the accepted belief of the worthy deacon. He, therefore, - with his daughter, Eleanor Bowers, - took himself from Mr. Tolman's church and ministry, and they became connected with the Methodist church at Lunenburg, where his Arminiam ideas received cordial fellowship and sympathy.[3]
