John Harry was baptised on 1st March 1812 at Saltash in Cornwall, son of Mary Harry, formerly Tucker, and her husband John Harry, a labourer and waterman. He appears to have been the eldest of six children, although two of his younger siblings died young.

On 2nd September 1838, aged 26, John married Ann Spearman at St Budeaux, on the opposite bank of the River Tamar to Saltash. They then moved to nearby Devonport, where they appear in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses. They appear to have had two children, and John worked as an agricultural labourer.

John died on 5th September 1853, aged 41. He was buried two days later at Stoke Damerel church, the parish church which covered Devonport.
