Will Transcript

Will of John Hardman
Whereas from the cause of nature and the effects of disease I cannot reasonably calculate on living much longer and having a desire to so dispose of what earthly goods I may have so as to be satisfactory to myself, therefore I John Hardman Senior of the County of Lewis and the state of West Virginia, do proceed by this my last will and testament to make the following disposition of all that I may possess in wit:
Item 1st I give and bequeath to my beloved granddaughter Martha A. Morrison [sic, s/b be Martha A. Morris] my bead [sic] and my house property that I may have at my death and also my trunk or chest.
Item 2nd I will to my son John G. Hardman, saddle bridle and saddle pockets and all my wearing appearel my pocketbook and all the money that may be found in after the payments of my debts and funeral expences.
3rd I give and bequeath my Bible to my beloved son Samuel B. Hardman now living in the state of Illinoise
I hereby appoint and constitute John McCoy of the county of Lewis and the state of West Virginia and township of Lincoln as my executor to carry the above will in to effect and in evidence of the above being my last will and testament I hereunto sign my name and acknowledgement in the presence of the following witnesses on the day and date above written.

    Born at Big Youghigany, PA. Son of Charlotte Lazier and Peter Hardman. Occupation: 1850 Gunsmith. 1m to Elizabeth Jane Lockhart on 25 Nov 1791. 2m to Elizabeth Waggoner on 21 Nov 1798 in Harrison Co, WV.

    John D. Hardman, a son of Peter and Charlotte (Lazier) Hardman, was born on the Youghigany River in Pennsylvania October 7, 1777 and died in Lewis County WV May 9, 1864. (Another source states that he was born in 1770.) He married Jane Lockhart on 25 Nov 1791. He married Elizabeth Waggoner in Harrison County VA on 10 Nov 1798. Elizabeth, a daughter of John and Margaret (Bonnett) Waggoner, was born November 5, 1779 and died February 1, 1854. She was captured by Chief Tecumseh and his warriors May 7, 1792 and was returned in 1795.
