Also living with them Amanda Adams 34, mu, dressmaker, b. PA. Everyone else on this page was white. Value of William Anderson’s personal property $300

1860 Monmouth Co, NJ Register of Deeds, Liber 157, pg 282, dtd 12/3/1860: “This indenture made this first day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty between Thomas H. Mount and Frances C. his wife of the township of Middletown, County of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, partyof the first part, and William H. Guy and John E. Guy, brothers (and colored persons) of the same place party of the second part Witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of Two hundred dollars lawful money of the United States of America to the said party of the first part, in hand well and truly paid by the said party of the second part, ... have granted, bargained, sold, ... All that certain lot and parcel of land lying and situate (sic) on Old woman hill in the township, County and State aforesaid beginning at a stake standing in the Northwest corner of Henrietta Guys lot and in the line of Bowne’s land from thence running according to a survey made September 3rd A.D. 1853 .... Together wiah all and singular the buildings...”

His apparent wife, Caroline 42, bl, b. CT, could read and write. Their apparent daughters, Emma A. 10, bl, b. NJ, attended school; Ada A. 7, bl, b. NJ. Also living with them, Mary Bruce 18, bl, b. NJ, hair dresser, could read and write; and Pricilla Geer 80, bl, b. CT, could read and write.

NJ), listed as hairdresser; Pricilla Geer(?), B, 80 (b. CT).... possibly Caroline’s mother? Family 759. Listed as Family 756, William Guy, B, 44 (b. VA), wife Rebecca, B, 40 (b. NJ), John, B, 21 (b. NJ), listed as coachman, and Lavinia Jackson, B, 20 (b. NJ), listed as dressmaker. No relationship stated between Lavinia and the Guys. Is William John’s brother? Family 757, Henrietta Guy, B, 69 (b. VA). I suspect that she’s William and John’s mother.

CT as were both of her parents. Their children Emma A., 20, b. NJ, was a dressmaker, her father b. NY, her mother b. CT; Ida A., 16, b. NJ, father b. NY, mother b. CT.

NJ Index of Wills, lists one John E. Guy, in 1896, Will no. 15982M (Monmouth). Also listed, Henrietta Guy, in 1878, Inventory no. 13550M (Monmouth).

1883 Monmouth Co, NJ Register of Deeds, Liber 39, pg 256, dtd 7/31/1883: “This indenture made this Eighteenth day of June in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Eighty Three between Thomas Leonard and Mary A. his wife of the Towhship of Middletown in the County of Monmouth and State of New Jersey party of the first part, and John E. Guy of the Township of Middletown .... party of the second part Witnesseth that the said party of the first part for and in consideration of the sum of Two hundred and fifty-five dollars ... has granted, bargained, sold, ... all that certain lot or tract or parcel of ground and premises situate lying and being in the township of Middletown ... beginning at a point in the Northerly line of Chestnt Avenue and therein distant Westerly two hundred and fourteen feet six inches from the North-westerly .... being lot number one hundred and thirty five (135) as depicted on a map entitled “Map of Hillside Park near Atlantic Highlands NJ J. C. Nobles Agent” ...”

1895 NJ State Census (Monmouth, Middletown, Hillside, penned sh 142, dwelling 782, no. 4123-4124) John E. Guy, colored male over 60; and Caroline Guy, colored female over 60.

1896 (from www.distantcousin.com/obits/nj/1800/1896/sep/09.html), dated Sept 9, 1896, titled, “John E. Guy.” “John E. Guy died at Atlantic Highlands yesterday morning, aged 64 years. he was stricken with apoplexy on Friday and became unconscious shortly afterward. He recovered consciousness at intervals during the time of his sickness. He was a caterer and worked for Thomas Swift at the Highlands until about a year ago. A widow and two daughters survive him. His funeral will be held to-morrow at Zion church at Navesink at two o’clock.” [the source of the obituary is not stated]

1896 (from www.distantcousin.com/obits/nj/1800/1896/sep/30.html), dated Sept 30, 1896, titled, “Two Wills Probated.” “The wills of Eva H. Ludlow of Wall township and John E. Guy of Atlantic Highlands were probated at Freehold last week. .... By the will of John M. Guy his executors, Emma A. Guy and Charles K. Jackson, are directed to sell the real estate, which is valued at $2,000, one year after his deat. The proceeds of the sale are to go [to] his widow and two daughters, Ida A. Guy and Emma A. Guy. Two granddaughters, Pauline and Florence Jackson, are each left $50.”

1896 Will of John Guy, will no. 15982, Monmouth County, NJ, NJSA film 549850 “Monmouth County Surrogate’s Office - In the Matter of the Probate of Alleged Will of John E. Guy (colored) Order for Probate. Application having been made by Emma A Guy and Charles K Jackson for Probate of the last Will and Testament John E. Guy (colored) deceased, and letters Testamentary thereon, and the Surrogate .....” And it appearing that the testator died more than then days ago, it is on this Twenty third day of September A.D. eighteen hundred and ninety-six adjudged tha the .......”

5/5/03 - I looked through the Monmouth County Marriages for 1848-1878 and could find no match.

1896 New Jersey Report of Death [unnumbered] John E. Guy 64 years, 10 mos, 8 days, colored, married, b. NY, last residence Middletown Town, Monmonth County, resided in the state about 36 years, died in Middletown Town, Monmouth County, father’s name John Guy, b. USA, mother’s name Henrietta Guy, b. USA. Died 8 Sept 1896 of cerebral apoplexy from which he’d suffered about 10 days. Buried in Navesink.
