John's mother died shortly after his birth. He was taken to the church in Dorminton for his christening by his uncle and aunt William and Anne Lewis. John's christening record is mistakenly recorded as John Lewis instead of John Griffiths. John Griffiths was raised by his Uncle William and Aunt Ann (Griffiths) Lewis in Dormington and married in Hampton Bishop. Tupsley is a township and part of the parish of Hampton Bishop. Hampton Bishop is just across the river Wye from Mordiford. It is an easy walk of less than 3 miles between all three of those parishes (Hampton Bishop, Mordiford and Dorminton).
