John William Griffing Sr., 93, of Kerrville, formerly of Beeville, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2009. He was an engineer and consultant and a member of First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Nona W. Griffing; sons, John W. Griffing Jr. and Dan L. Griffing; daughter, Gayle Browning; four grandchildren; and stepchildren, Nona S. McKinney, Hollis McKinney, and Donna McKinney. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Geraldine "Gerry" Langford; two sisters; and two brothers.

John Griffing of Beeville, who narrowly escaped death three times as a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II, has died.

He was 93.

Griffing died Saturday at a nursing home in Austin where he moved recently after living in Beeville for the past 57 years.

The Army awarded him the Bronze Star of Valor for the courage he displayed while a POW.
