Attorney and Legislator. He was educated at Transylvania University of Lexington Kentucky. Gordon studied law in the office of W.H. Caperton of the Richmond bar and went into practice with Col. John Speed Smith of Kentucky. After establishing a successful practice he married Miss Sophia Hawkins, daughter of Nicholas Hawkins. The Hawkins family had emigrated to Kentucky from Virginia previous to 1826. After a time, the Gordon family moved to Boone County Missouri. Gordon entered the political arena and carried the county for the Whig party being elected to the legislature for five consecutive terms from 1830 - 1840. Columbia is indebted to him for his eloquence and perseverance in regards to locating the State University in the city. In 1840 he returned for a time to his home state of Kentucky to teach law. In an unusual turn of events he returned to Columbia Missouri and retired from active practice in order to devote his time to instructing his children. When he died in 1853 he left behind six children and his wife. The eldest daughter, Martha, married Judge Robert H. Clinkscales. His second daughter, Ida, married Professor Oren Root Jr. His oldest son Boyle followed law in his father's footsteps studying law and was a professor at the University. Emmett, Wellington and Carey completed a full classical course of four years at the University. Cause of death: pneumonia.
