John Gillard was baptised on 24th April 1836 at Upton in Somerset, son of an agricultural labourer named Robert Gillard and his wife Jane. The 1841 census finds John living with his parents and sister at Skilgate, just south of Upton. By 1851 John's parents had moved to Kingsbrompton (also known as Brompton Regis) but John had left home and was working as an agricultural labourer at Higher Radnage in the parish of East Anstey in Devon.
By the 1861 census John was living at Knowstone, just south of Higher Radnage. Later that year John married Ann May, who had been working as the cook for the vicar of Knowstone. John and Ann appear to have had at least six children together. For the first few years of their marriage they moved between various locations close to the Devon / Somerset border.
By the mid 1870s they appear to have settled at Ashill Moor in the parish of Uffculme. Ann died in 1888, aged 55.
Two years later John married again, to a widow named Elizabeth Salter, formerly Tucker. The 1891 census finds John living at Ashill Moor with Elizabeth and several children from her first marriage. Elizabeth appears to have died in 1899. The 1901 census finds John living with his stepson George and George's wife Bessie at Whitmoor, adjoining Ashill Moor.
John died in 1907, aged 71. He was buried at Uffculme.
