Ann May was baptised on 4th November 1832 at Bradninch in Devon, daughter of Susannah May, formerly Greenslade, and her husband William May, a husbandman and dairyman. The family lived at Downhead, a farm some way out of the village itself. By the time of the 1841 census the family had moved to the hamlet of Knowle in the neighbouring parish of Cullompton.

By 1851 Ann had left home and was working as a servant at a doctor's house in Exeter. She was still in service ten years later, working as cook for the vicar of Knowstone in the 1861 census. She was married in that area later that year to a dairyman named John Gillard. Between 1862 and 1874 they had six children together, although one died as a baby, and frequently moved around different Devon villages.

By 1874 they were living at Rull near Ashill in the parish of Uffculme. Ann stayed living in this area for the rest of her life. Ann's mother died in 1878.

Ann died in 1888, aged 55. Her father outlived her, whilst her husband John married again two years later.
