It is not certain who John's parents are. There are 3possibilities: the first is he may be the son of ThomasGalloway and Ann Winegood. If so, he would have been born inSC. Brunswick Co. was formed in 1764 from Bladen and NewHanover. The NHC Court Minutes 1738-1769, C.R. 070.301.1, p.223give an account of minor children of one Thomas Galloway forwhom a guardian was appointed naming Thomas, Catherine, Matthew, and Sarah. Thomas being deceased 6 Sep 1764. Whether thisThomas was John's father has not been proven. Perhaps John andWilliam were of legal age by then. No other estate documentshave been found for this earlier Thomas. Earlier NHC Taxrecords place a Thomas in Wilmington in the 1750's. John is listed in Burke's "American Families with BritishAncestry", Baltimore, MD1983, 2697 as having married Sarah Bell, but gives no real account of who he is. James Sprunt's "Chronicles of the Cape Fear River", Raleigh, NC,1914, p.681, claims that "about the year 1750 (there) emigratedfrom county Galloway, scotland two brothers, Samuel andCornelius Galloway". Sprunt clains that Samuel made his home onLockwood's Folly River and these two are the progenitors of tehBrunswick County Galloway clan. This has not been proventhrough NC land grants and extant Brunswick County records.
