John Fensom was baptised on Christmas Eve in 1775 at Luton in Bedfordshire. He was the son of James and Frances Fensom.

John did not marry until he was 43. He was married on 28th August 1819 at Wheathampstead, a few miles south-east of Luton, to Ellen Filby. They returned to Luton after their marriage where they had four daughters baptised between 1820 and 1829. John worked as a shoemaker.

The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find the family living on Tower Hill in Luton. In 1851 Ellen was also working as a plait maker.

John died in 1858, aged 82. Ellen survived him by about six years.
