His family moved to Missouri in 1879, settling in Caldwell Co. He was the second child of eleven children, and was united with the Methodists Church at an early age. There were no children from his marriage to Dora Lillian.

JOHN WILLIAM EMERY - 5/21/1872 - 1/15/1948 John W. Emery, lifetime resident of this community, died in his home Thursday morning, after about a 2 week illness. He was born May 21, 1870 in Greene County, Indiana. He was the 2nd child of 11 children, 4 of whom survive. The family moved to Missouri in 1879, settling in Caldwell County, where he spent his entire life. He was widely known in this community where for many years he was engaged in farming. On December 12, 1912, he was united in marriage with Miss Dora Lillian Jackson, daughter of the late Jacob and Martha Jane Jackson, early pioneers of Missouri and Caldwell county. Besides his wife he is survived by 2 brothers, Ben Emery of Kingston; Homer E. Emery of Ogallala, Nebraska and 2 sisters, Mrs. Flora Lester of Hamilton and Mrs. Jennie Palmer of Anaheim, California. Also several nieces and nephews. He united with the Methodist church at an early age. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church with the pastor, Reverend W. O. G. Potter officiating. Burial was in the Cowgill Cemetery. The WSCS of the Methodist church served a lunch of sandwiches, pickles, cake and coffee to about 45 relatives and friends from out-of-town who were here Sunday to attend the funeral rites for John Emery. Those from out-of-town here Sunday to attend the John Emery funeral were: Mr. And Mrs. Grafton Jackson and son, of Hamilton; Mr. And Mrs. Homer Emery of Nebraska; Mr. And Mrs. Carl Fonch of Carrollton; Mr. And Mrs. Otto Crowley of Excelsior Springs; Mr. And Mrs. Ruby Jackson; Pearley Jackson and son Jim; Mr. And Mrs. Charles Brownlee; Mrs. N. J. Flint; Mrs. Mary Jackson; Mrs. Minnie Crawford; Mr. And Mrs. Carl Jackson; Mrs. Cecil Couch, all of Kansas City; Mrs. Elva Petree, Dave Jackson, John Jackson and daughter Mary Lee of Richmond; Mrs. Nell Revis; Mrs. Daisy Jackson and son Earl; and Mr. And Mrs. Forrest Shadduck of Cameron.
