Early Ebbotts and the Wescott Farm

According to the "Our Cornish Heritage Genealogies of Reed, Rowe, Ebbott and related families Immigrants to Jefferson County, Wisconsin" by S.D.Reed - John Ebbott inherited Westcott from her father, John Baker.

"John was a farmer at Westcott farm in Tremaine, parish, just over the hill from the church; his wife Wilmot had inherited Westrcott from her father, John Baker." (page XI-5)

Which is confirmed by the transcription of his will (page XI-22)

"John Baker left a will, proved 23 October 1793, which nicely verifies three generations of the Baker-Ebbot lineage. 'In the Name of God Amen I John Baker of the parish of Tremain in the County of Cornwall, Yeoman, being of sound and perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to Almighty God for the same, but because I am as all men are mortal and subject to Death do therefore make and ordain this to be my Last Will and Testament, in manner following.

First, I give and bequeath my Soul into the Hands of Almighty God who gave it me hoping thro the merits Death and Passion of my blessed Redeemer to have full and free Pardon and forgiveness of all my sins and to inherit Everlasting Life my Body I remit to the Earth to be decently interred at the discretion of my Executor howafter named and as for such worldly goods, chattels, lands and effects as it hath pleased God to bless me with, I give and dispose of as follows.

In the first place, I give unto my son-in-law, John Ebbott, the sum of one shilling to be paid him in six months next after my decease.

Next I give unto my daughter Wilmot Ebbott all my estate in Westcott, after the death of my Executor, paying four pounds a year to my daughter Mary Joliffe out of the estate during her mortal life.

Also, I give unto my son-in-law John Joliffe the sum of one shilling… Also I give unto my daughter Mary Joliffe my estate called by the name Dearses (?) and also I give unto her another estate of mine called by the name of Sittel Downs after the death of my Executor….

Also, I give unto my grandson Phillip Ebbott one guinea …..

Also I give unto my granddaughter Elizabeth Ebbott one guinea ….

Also I give unto my granddaughter Margery Hoskin sixty pounds which was her father's, to be paid her within three years after my decease. Also I give her twenty pounds more of lawful English money to be paid her within two years after my decease.

Also, I give my grandson, John Hoskin, forty pounds ….

Also, I give my granddaughter Mary Jollife one guinea ….

Also I give unto my granddaughter Grace Jollife one guinea …

Also I give unto my grandson Richard Jollife one guinea …

Lastly, all the rest, residue, and remainder … unto my wife Margery Baker and I do nominate, constitute, and appoint her my said wife the whole and sole Executor …. Have set my hand and seal this seventh day of June in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand and seven hundred and ninety three' "

Margery according to her gravestone died in 1815 "MEMORY OF / MARGERY BAKER / wife of John Baker of this / Parish who was Buried the / 16th day of August 1815 / In the 84th Year of her Age"

This is when John Ebbott and Wilmet Baker would have taken over the management of the property.

In 1825 John Ebbott husband of Margery Baker dies.

Philip Upton Ebbott and family appear to have been living at Westgate at least up until 1817 according to "Cornish roots! [electronic resource]" and may be even up until 1821 "They lived for a time (at least until 1821) on the family farm of Westcott in Tremaine Parish. By the 1841 Census, Philp and his family had moved to Trehummer Farm in Tresmeer parish, where they also appear in the 1851 Census"

Their son Henry Ebbott is according to "Cornish roots! [electronic resource]" born at Westcott

Note in the 1841 there is an empty residence on the Westcott estate, perhaps this is where the Ebbott's had lived.

As a matter of interest mention also was the following "John Reed who married Elizabeth Ebbott (daughter of Philip Upton Ebbott and Mary Ferrett) lived at Westcott farm in Tremaine from 1829 to 1837-38, then relocating to Caudworthy Park in North Petherwin. This coincides with the death of his father, so they probably moved "home" to care for his aging mother." (page V-I)
