John Drake was baptised on 23rd January 1722 at Stoke Damerel in Devon, the parish which covered the town of Plymouth Dock. He was the son of Philippa Drake, formerly Stockman, and her husband William Drake.

John has yet to be traced for certain after his baptism. It is possible that he was the John Drake who married at Bere Ferrers in 1746, but further proof needed to be certain.
