Facts and Events
John Dorman and Mary Taylor were born and raised in Pickworth, Rutland County, England. They were married in 1868 when John was twenty-five years old and Mary was twenty-three. Two years later in 1870, when they had a one year old daughter, Phoebe, John announced they were going to leave Pickworth for the United States. His father, like John, were not land owners, only farm laborers for someone else's farm and he wanted an opportunity to own land. They bought passage on the ship, "City of London", a steam ship that traveled from Liverpool to Castle Garden, New York City, New York. Mary's grandchildren remembered her talking about the whales "as long as the ship" that they saw during passage. They may have known someone from the family that already lived in Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County, New York because that is where they were living by 1870. It is the opposite end of the state from New York City where they landed. John and Mary lived in Cherry Creek for at least ten years, from 1870 - 1880, and perhaps longer, as their children were born and went to school there. In 1888, John applied for citizenship of the United States. He had lived in Chautauqua County for about 18 years by then. His final papers were filed in Mayville in 1892. In 1901, John bought a 40 acre farm in Arkwright and realized his dream of owning his own farm. He was 59 years old. John and Mary owned their farm for only about eight years until John died at the age of 67. John had realized their dream by coming to the United States, becoming citizens, owning land, and offering opportunities to their children. --Kath newc 19:50, 18 January 2010 (EST) References
