Males living on the same road as John Davenport, about 1706, West side of Scuppernong: (Data from NC Hist. & Geneal. Register, 1900-1903)

Rich'd Davenport (probably John's brother, per Richard's court action, March 1700) Hen. Norman Ro. Fewox Sam'l Spruell Godfrey Spruell Joseph Spruell La. Alexander Cut. Phelps Matt. Casswell Sam'l Hopkins Tho. Winn Will Tarkinton Chas. Craddock Jon. Swain Jose. Fisher

After this was given a group (many Alexanders) who lived on the East side of the Scuppernong River. In the old records, the Davenports and Spruills interact in many ways, such as marriage and land sales, that indicate that the early branches of their families lived in the same local area. We know where the Spruills first lived. According to the Tyrrell County Genealogical and Historical Society Newsletter of November, 1995, reprinting an article in "The State", August 1, 1964, in 1697 Dr. Godfrey Spruill moved to a thousand-acre plot near present-day Colonial Beach near Bull Bay and just west of Scuppernong Bay. Running east-west, just south of the Spruill location, is an old road named Davenport Road, that may have originally run from the Scuppernong Bay near Colonial Beach to Mackey's Ferry in the west.

According to the Tyrrell County Genealogical and Historical Society Newsletter, November 1995, using facts gathered from the colonial records, the earliest settlers south of the Albemarle Sound were:

Richard Addison Alexander family Blount family members Richard Burtonshall, wife Priscilla Joseph Canings (?) Lewis Connor Charles Craddock Richard Craddock John Davenport Robert Fewox Jonathan Fisher Thomas Garland Thomas Gaylord William Hardy John Hassell Thomas Hawking (Hawkins) Robert Holdbrook John Hopkins Mary Lawson, widow of John Lawson, the surveyor Mrs. Alice Long, widow of James Long John Nairne Henry Norman Cuthbert Phelps Edward Phelps Jonathan Phelps Samuel Phelps (These are the Phelps Lake Phelps) James Singleton Godfrey Spruill, Jr. Joseph Spruill Samuel Spruill John Tarkington White family William Wilkinson John Wingate John Yates

Many of the above came from around Queen Anne's Creek and Edenton on the North shore.
