    John Cottrell came from Roxbury, Mass., about the year 1807, and located three miles east of Poestenkill village, on the farm now occupied by his son, George Cottrell. He had nine children, all of whom and living except one girl. Of the sons, George resides on the old homestead; James resides about a mile west of Poestenkill; John C. resides in Michigan; William L. resides in town; Amasa lives in Iowa.

    Benjamin Cottrell, grandfather of George and William L. Cottrell, and a subsequent resident of the town, served in the war, and drew the first wheelbarrow-load for the Bunker Hill fortifications.
