John Knarston Clouston was born on 11th February 1816 at Stenness on Orkney, son of Ann Flett and her husband Henry Clouston, a ship carpenter. John followed his father’s trade and also became a ship carpenter.

John’s next sighting is on 22nd September 1838, aged 22, when he married Jessie Preston at Aberdeen. Presumably he left Orkney to go and work at the shipyards in Aberdeen.

John and Jessie went on to have ten children in Aberdeen between 1841 and 1863, although three died young.

In the 1841 census the family was living in Aberdeen at Links Street. In 1851 they were in the St Clement area near the docks, after which they moved to nearby York Street, where they appear in both the 1861 and 1871 censuses. Back in Orkney, John’s mother died in 1861.

John’s daughter Jessie died in Aberdeen in 1879, aged about 29, leaving two small children. It would appear that and John and Jessie then raised their two grandchildren.

Sometime between 1871 and 1881 the family left Scotland and moved a couple of hundred miles south to Jarrow in County Durham, in the north-east of England. Several of their adult children had already moved to that area. The 1881 census finds John and Jessie living at 45 Clayton Street in Jarrow with their youngest son, their late daughter Jessie’s two children, and three lodgers.

Jessie died at home at 45 Clayton Street in Jarrow on 3rd April 1891, aged about seventy.

John’s daughter Isabella died in Jarrow the following year, aged 46.

John died on 31st May 1895 at 40 Queens Road in Jarrow, aged 79.

Baptisms in Stenness / Clouston / John Knarston lawful son of Harry Clouston and Ann Flett was born Feb[ruary] [written over "March" crossed out] 11th 1816

This baptism has been linked to the John Clouston who married Jessie Preston on the basis that it is at the place he gave as his birthplace as an adult and around the time implied by the ages he gave. Whilst none of his records as an adult give his middle name in full, he did give his name as “John K. Clouston” in the 1871 census.
