Isabella Preston Clouston was baptised on 8th November 1845 in Aberdeen, daughter of Jessie Clouston, formerly Preston, and her husband John Knarston Clouston, a shipwright. She appears in the 1851 census living with her parents and siblings in Aberdeen. The family was still in Aberdeen in 1861, living at 34 York Street, and with Isabella working as an envelope maker.

Isabella was married on 2nd October 1868, aged 22, to John Maitland, who worked as a brass finisher. They had a son born in Aberdeen the following year. In 1870 they had another son, but he died when only ten or fifteen minutes old. After that, Isabella, John and their son left Aberdeen and moved south to England, initially living in Sunderland, where they appear in the 1871 census. For the next few years they moved around various ports and shipbuilding centres along England's north-eastern coast, living at different times in Sunderland, Hull, Tynemouth and Jarrow. Isabella's parents followed her down to England some time between 1871 and 1881, settling in Jarrow. Isabella and John had eight children in total: five boys and three girls, with six children surviving to adulthood.

Isabella's mother died in Jarrow in 1891. The census taken two days later finds Isabella and John living at 28 Lord Street in Jarrow with their children, whilst Isabella's father and some of her siblings were at 45 Clayton Street in Jarrow.

Isabella only outlived her mother by just over a year. She died on 5th August 1892 at 46 Lord Street in Jarrow of heart disease and dropsy. She was 46 years old. Her father outlived her by nearly three years, whilst her husband outlived her by 34 years.
