 According to a WorldConnect database, John married Aridella Brinegar (~1870-1901), daughter of William Harrison Brinegar and Almarinda Vice, in 1892. They had children Earl Rodger 1893-1960; Alma 1894-1978; and Clarene 1897-1979.  He had previously married Lucy Ellen Vice (1872-1890), daughter of John R.  I believe his third wife was Ann Moore, daughter of James W. Moore.

Nov 1869, with 3 of 4 children living; children are Earl b. 1893; Alma 1894; and Clarine b. 1897. Farm hands are Samuel Vice 24 and [brother-in-law] Nolan H. Brinegar 25.  In the 1920 census for Buzzards Roost, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, John W. Clay is 52 KY, with wife Annie L. 43; children are Clarine 22 'bookkeeper - bank'; (Philona J.?) 11; and Eva 6. Father-in-law James W. Moore is 65 KY, widower.
 There is a death record for John W. Clay who died in 1935 in Nicholas Co. at age 68.
