Notes

John was living in Rehoboth in 1644, and on Long Island by the mid-1650s. He was in Huntington, Long Island by 1660, then Hempstead, Long Island during the early 1660s, and finally Jamaica, Long Island[4].

John Carpenter was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jamaica, organized in 1662. On June 19, 1676, he and his brother-in-law Nehemiah Smith were appointed to settle the Reverend John Prudden as Minister of the church.

Like his father William Carpenter of Rehoboth, John Carpenter was a man of superior ability and education, who did much to assist in improving his community throughout his life.

'The will of John Carpenter, dated 10 November 1694 and proved 23 May 1695, names sons John (eldest), Hope (second), Samuel (third), and William (coexecutor); daughter Ruth Ludlam; grandchildren Hannah and Abigail Rhodes and [John4’s son] Solomon Carpenter; wife Hannah (co-executor); and overseers Joseph and Nehemiah Smith.'[5]

Further Reading

Carpenter Sketches includes an article on John Carpenter by Eugene Cole Zubrinsky, which the reader is referred to for more extensive information, as well as source citations. Zubrinsky periodically updates the article, and the reader is encouraged to check it for his latest research.

Amos B. Carpenter's book A Genealogical History of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family in America, brought down from their English ancestor, John Carpenter, 1303, with many biographical notes of descendants and allied families also referred to as Carpenter Memorial presents an English ancestry that has since been debunked, as well as much other misinformation, and should be used only in consulation with the work of Zubrinsky.
