John appears in a petition with his siblings dated April 7, 1661 indicating that John Hicks, whom their mother married after their father’s death, retained possession of the entire property left by their parents, though they all requested their share several times. In Jan 1662, John Hicks makes an ante-nuptual agreement with Rachel Starr of Oyster Bay which mentions the property.

Miller of grain and a sawmill operator, he had a mill on the west side of Hicks Neck. He acted as a Townsmen of Hempstead in 1663. His will written 14 Sept 1684 names his sons Caleb, Benjamin, Samuel, Thomas and John, his daughter Abigail. It also ordered two of his sons "to take my brother Joshua Carman's estate into their hands and to provide for him, if he wishes" [NYGBR 65:115].
