1959 - Newspaper Clipping: Services Are Set For Calkins Youth. Ransomville - Services for John Calkins Jr, 16, of Calkins Rd, killed Monday when struck by a barn door blown loose in a freak wind storm, will be held at 2pm Thursday at the Gentle Funeral Parlor here. Young Calkins was working on the farm of Walter Sattleberg, Calkins Rd, Town of Lewistonwhen the accident occurred. Mr Sattleberg said the youth was putting a tractor in the barn after completing haying when the wind struck, knocking the barn doors off. One door hit the boy on the side of the head, knocking from the tractor .... the storm the telephone was out of service. Help was summoned from the nearby Buttery Restaurant where the telephone was still working. The Lewiston Fire Co ambulance and Dt Gerrard Ca???, Niagara County coroner, responded, Dr Ca??? pronounced the youth dead. Also summoned was the boy's mother, Mrs John A. Calkins. She brought blankets but by the time she arrived the lad was unconscious. He died moments later. "When he left home at 9 o'clock this morning he said 'I'll be home in time for lunch'," his mother said. The youth celebrated his 16th birthday June 25. He would have entered the ninth grade at Lewiston-Porter Central School in September. The Calkins family has lived in Calkins Rd since 1840. The road is named for them. Surviving in addition to his parents are a sister, betty Louise, 14, his maternal grandfather, Harry Gibbs, his maternal grandmother, Mrs Nelson Shaw, both of Niagara Falls; two aunts, Mrs Arthur Stipp, Ransomville, and Miss Frances Gibbs, Niagara Falls, and an uncle, Ray Calkins, Wheatfield. Officiating at the Services will be the Rev James Finelly of Youngstown Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in North Ridge Cemetery.
