Facts and Events
Relatively little is known about John Buckner III. Most of our information comes from the Caroline Co. order books and a few Essex Co. deeds. Most likely, he was fairly young when he died, probably no older than his 40s. He lived in Essex and later Caroline Co. VA (after Caroline was created). Crozier incorrectly states that he lived in Stafford Co., misquoting an Essex Co. deed of 27 July 1727, which in the original clearly states that he lived in St. Mary's parish of Essex Co. This deed is particularly crucial in that it names a 500 acre tract in St. Mary's parish given to him by his mother Ann (Ann Ballard Buckner) and then given to his son William. This 500 acre tract then devolved to William's eldest son Richard Buckner 60 years later in William's will, giving us our firmest evidence for tracing this family. Almost all of the information given about John Buckner III in Crozier's Buckners of Virginia is flatly contradicted by primary sources, so it should not be relied upon as a source for him. References
