  1.   This family is difficult to reconstruct, and the task is complicated by numerous false starts by genealogists in the past. The key records are mostly in the Caroline Co. VA court order books. The estate of John Buckner was executed by his widow Elizabeth in 1740 and 1741. She deeded land to Thomas and William Buckner in 1750 and then to her "son George Buckner" in 1752. The order books record a division of the land between Thomas and William right after that, which is typical of inherited parcels. After careful study of Caroline land records, it becomes clear that Thomas and William Buckner of Caroline owned contiguous estates, Mill Hill and Lake Farm respectively, which were near George's estate (later called Braynefield), and all three estates were of similar extents (around 1000 acres), so from this it can be inferred that William and Thomas were coheirs of John Buckner along with George. Numerous subsequent records have William and Thomas appearing together and with their brother-in-law (and neighbor at Ormesby) Anthony Thornton, which corroborates the idea that they were brothers. The analysis is complicated by the fact that Richard Buckner of Caroline (d 1732/3, their father's uncle) also had a widow Elizabeth who was still alive in the early 1750s, but they can be distinguished by their residences. John Buckner III's family lived in Drysdale Parish on the Mattaponi and Richard Buckner's family lived in St. Mary's parish off on the Golden Vale near the Rappahannock. There may have been a fourth brother John Buckner (m. Elizabeth Washington in 1760), but the evidence is still tenuous for that. John Buckner's widow Elizabeth was frequently involved in legal matters with the Long family and it is likely that that was her maiden name.
