Facts and Events
Name John Buckner
Gender Male
Marriage to Elizabeth Fowke
Death? Abt 1752

John Buckner in 1742 owned 50 acres in Stafford Co. VA. It appears that this was half of the land owned by Phillip Buckner of Stafford (d. 1700) and devised by him to his sons Robert (d. 1718) and Andrew. The two halves of this land were later sold to Anthony Thornton by Peyton Buckner (in 1739) and then John Buckner. John later went on to buy a 100 acre plot, which after his death in 1752 went partly to his daughter Susan and partly to his widow Elizabeth (Fowke) Buckner. After his daughter died, his sister Sarah (Buckner) Price claimed Susan's inheritance, from which we can infer that John was not Peyton's brother and that John had no surviving siblings other than Sarah Price. John was named executor in the will of his grandmother Anne Marshall in 1740, and she was the widow of Thomas Marshall. Thus, John and Sarah Buckner's mother was probably their daughter. Corroborating this, one of the slaves left to John by Anne Marshall was named Nan, and a slave of the same name was one of the ones named in the marriage contract between his widow Elizabeth and Zachariah Brazier (Elizabeth's will confirms that she was in fact a Fowke by birth, and if one investigates her family, it can be determined that Anne Marshall was not her grandmother, so John was not merely a grandson-in-law). Two possible scenarios for John's parentage are (A) he was the son of either Robert or Andrew and Peyton was a son of the other brother or (B) John was the son of William Buckner (d. 1727) and Elizabeth Marshall (d. 1725) while Peyton was the son of William's elder brother Anthony Buckner (d. 1734). In scenario (B), Robert and Andrew both died without issue and their land was devised by one or the other to Anthony and William, who in turn devised ti to their sons. At this time, it's difficult to decide between them, but the important thing to note is that all the gazillion trees on the internet that claim to have the right answer are just guesses. Do not believe one or the other until there is some solid evidence.
