He was taken ill last Tuesday and gradually weakened, due to his advanced age. Mr. Board was 78 years old at the time of his death. He was a native of Missouri, and came across the plains with his father, David Board, when nine years of age. At the time his parents settled in San Joaquin county where they resided a few years. Visalia Morning Delta (Visalia, Tulare, California) Tuesday, January 29, 1924, page 2, California State Library, Sacramento, California. John M. Board purchased property in Tulare County, California on April 14, 1894. Lived in Oakdale When It Was An Oak Forest John Board, who farmed around Oakdale when he had to clear away the oak trees to run his plow, was an Oakdale visitor with his wife Monday. He called on E. C. Crawford, M. P. Kearney and other old timers as he tried to recall old scenes where he had farmed many years ago. Mr. Board left Oakdale in 1886 and noted many changes in the appearance of his old home. He is now a resident of Visalia. "I remember when there were oak trees where many of your nicest homes are today", said Mr. Board. I farmed what is now the Leitch Tract, in 1869 and later farmed the big Bailey Tract. I cut 1600 cords of oak wood right near town and had it piled at the depot. That was in '86. I believe, before the extension of the Southern Pacific to Merced. "When I was around here there were only two hotels on the corner, a store or two, the depot, and the rest of the business was made up saloons. Yes, Oakdale has grown quite a bit since I left here in '86" Oakdale Leader (Oakdale, Stanislaus County, California) Tuesday, 19 October 1915.
