    ... John Bertrand, the father of Mary Ann Bertrand, was a Protestant minister, exiled during the persecution in the reign of Louis XIV. He went with his brother Paul from France to London. They were evidently sober, respectable men, for both became clerks in the Church of England. The two brothers left England afterward for America. The wife of John Bertrand was Charlotte Jolly, a French nobleman's daughter, with whom, he escaped from France, and to whom he was married in London, September 29, 1686.
