Will of John Barnett

Pages 145-46. Will of John Barnett, being sick and weak and in low condition, dated 1 April 1750.

To my beloved wife Marran Barnet my land and plantation whereon I now live with all my personal estate during her natural life. If she marries she should have no more than the law allows.

After her decease my son John Barnet should have it. In case he should die without heir my daughter Anne should have it and in case she should die without heir, it should be equally divided amongst the rest of my daughters.

To my son James Barnet my lost mountain land. In case he should die without heir it should be equally divided amongst my daughters.

To my son Ambrose Barnet one tract on the branches of Smith's Run bounded by Edward Price, Zachary Gibbs, John Medley. In case he should die without heir it should be equally divided amongst my daughters.

After my wife's decease or when she marries my personal estate should be equally divided amongst my children, only my daughter Sarah Wats shall have to the value of £19.10.- current money less than the rest, which she has already received.

My water mill should go with the mannor house.

If any of my children should marry and my wife should think fit to give them any part of my estate it should be valued by three justices and a memorandum of the same put on the County record.

My beloved wife Marran Barnett executrix till my son James and my son Ambrose shall come to age and then the should joyn with her. In case my wife should die before my sons comes to age, my son in law John Watts should be executor till my sons shall come to age and no longer.

Information on John Barnett

John BARNETT, believed to be the son of John BARNETT and his wife Anne of Middlesex Co., Va, was baptized in Christ Church parish 3 Dec. 1704. He died 1750 in Orange Co. (Orange Co., VA, Will Bk. 2, p. 145; written 1 Apr. 1750, pro. 24 May 1750) (A-21, this vol.) John married 13 Nov. 1728 in MIddlesex Co. (R57, p. 166)Marrin (Marran) GIBBS, daughter of John GIBBS and Mary (MULLENS). Marrin was baptized 20 Apr. 1707 in Christ Church parish (R57, p.70). John BARNETT bought, for 22 pounds, 184 a. of land in St. Mark's parish, Spotsylvania Co., 3 Apr. 1733 from Richard MAULDEN , both of the same parish and counkty (Spotsylvania Co., Va, Deed Bk. B, 1729-1734). That was in the portion of Spotsylvania Co. which was converted to Orange Co. in 1734.
