John Almond was baptised on 6th November 1815 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, son of a baker called Thomas Almond and his wife Ann. John had a twin sister called Catherine. By 1841 John was working for a miller in the nearby town of Sleaford.

On 1st February 1843, aged 27, John married Elizabeth Gray Turner back in Heckington. At the time of their marriage he was living at Billinghay.

After their marriage, John and Elizabeth returned to Sleaford, settling there on South Street, which was presumably the road later called Southgate. John worked as a miller and baker. They went on to have six children at Sleaford between 1844 and 1856, although one boy died as a baby, leaving four girls and a boy who survived infancy. Each census from 1851 to 1871 finds John, Elizabeth, their children and at least four servants living on South Street.

Early in 1880 notices were placed in the local newspaper advertising the sale of various machinery and contents of the water mill on Westgate in Sleaford, which was clearly occupied by John. The notices indicate that John lived at 45 South Street but ran his business from the watermill on Westgate. The reason for the sale was that the watermill was to be demolished 'after Lady Day'. As Lady Day (25th March) was one of the four quarter days on which rent was traditionally paid, it would seem likely that John was a tenant of the mill and his lease was coming to an end.

An auction was advertised for 22nd April 1880 at the watermill of the remaining contents of the mill. As it happened, John died just a few days later, on 30th April 1880, aged 64. After his death, another auction was held on 20th May 1880 of the tools of his trade that had not been sold when vacating the watermill, including five horses.

Elizabeth survived John by nearly seven years.
