Will and Probate

From his will, it appears that John Allyn did not marry, or (at least) did not have any heirs of his own body. However, an examination of his will and the subsequent administration, helps to reconstruct his family's relationships. Among those named in the will are: "my brother Benjamin"; "my brother Thomas"; "my brother Samuel"; "my brother Matthew Allyn"; "my brother Thomas Allyn my executor"; "my sister Gilbert's child"; "my sister Jane's child"; and "his [brother Matthew's] son Josias"

The published records of the administration of John's estate span the years 1707 to 1751. These records provide important genealogical information about the relationships among his brother and sisters:

1714 - "Ebenezer Gilbert of Farmington, Adms. on the estate of John Allyn, late of Windsor, appeared in Court and declared that he justly suspected Capt. Timothy Thrall, Samuel Allyn and Joanna, the wife of Samuel Bancroft, and Anne Allyn, widow, all of Windsor, to have in custody or possession some considerable part of that estate."

  • Ebenezer Gilbert, brother-in-law, husband of Hester (sister)
  • Timothy Thrall, brother-in-law, husband of Sarah Allyn (sister)
  • Samuel Allyn, brother(?)
  • Joanna Bancroft, widow (of Thomas, brother) married Samuel Bancroft
  • Anne Allyn, widow of Benjamin (brother)

1723 - "Timothy Loomis, Jacob Drake and Israel Stoughton are appointed to divide the real estate"

1742 - "Ann Allyn, alias Loomis, Adms. on the estate of Benjamin Allyn, which sd. Benjamin [brother of John] was an executor on the estate of John Allyn, of Windsor, decd., by her son Benjamin, her attorney, presented to this Court an account of sundry debts and charges against the estate of John Allyn,"

  • Ann Allyn, widow of Benjamin (brother), did she marry Nathaniel Loomis, in 1718

1751 - what appears to be the final distribution of lands to "To Henry Wolcott, to heirs of Joanna Stoughton, to heirs of Ebenezer Gilbert, to heirs of Samuel Allyn, to heirs of Thomas Wolcott, to heirs of Sarah Ward, to heirs of William Thrall, to heirs of Thomas Allyn", having been made by Jonathan Hills, Thomas Wells and John Pitkin.

  • Henry Wolcott; Jane Allyn (sister) married Henry Wolcott. This is probably the nephew.
  • Joanna Stoughton; Joanna Allyn (niece), dau. of Thomas (brother) & Joanna, married Daniel Stoughton
  • Ebenezer Gilbert, married Hester Allyn (sister)
  • Samuel Allyn (brother?, nephew the son of Samuel? who had a son Samuel (grand nephew), which died in 1724?)
  • Thomas Wolcott; Jane Allyn (sister) married Henry Wolcott. This appears to be John's nephew.
  • Sarah Ward
  • William Thrall, nephew, son of Thomas Thrall & Sarah Allyn (sister)
  • Thomas Allyn (brother? or nephew?)

Allyn, John, Windsor. Invt. £320-13-06. Taken 27 August, 1707, by Benjamin Newbery and Samuel Moore. Will dated 25 May, 1697.
The last will and testament of John Allyn, of Windsor, is as followeth: Imprimis : After the payment of all due debts and funeral charges, I dispose of my outward estate as followeth : All my land at Hartford swamp I give to my brother Benjamin, and to his heirs and assigns after him, never to be alienated from the name. If he have no male heir, then to be to my brother Thomas, or, next, to my brother Samuel. For the rest of my lands and moveable estate, I give to the children of my brothers and sisters ; only to my sister Gilbert's child and to my sister Jane's child I give £5 more than to any of the rest. To my brother Matthew Allyn and his children I give nothing; only to his son Josias I give a set of silver buttons. I appoint my brother Thomas Allyn my executor, and with him my brother Benjamin Allyn when he shall be of age.
