Johannes (John) Schwartz / Swartz, was born about 1757, son of Martin and Margaretha Lohrmann Schwartz, perhaps after they moved from Pennsylvania to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. "Johannes Schwarz" age 14, was confirmed at Woodstock, Virginia in June 1772 by Rev. John Krug on a circuit from Maryland. He was apparently the only child still underage when his parents died and in September 1774, George Keller of Shenandoah County was appointed guardian of "John Black, orphan of Martin Black, deceased" and made bond with Peter Black, "heir at law." Peter signed the bond as "Petter Schwartz." John Swartz married Susanna Lehman, daughter of Benjamin in 1787 and purchased land near present-day Saumsville from Ulrich Gfeller soon after his marriage. They were parents of eight children, all named in his will, written in April 1817. The will was probated August 11, 1817.
