Harrell, Joel, born 1758 in Bertie County, North Carolina; entered service in Martin County, North Carolina; moved to Botetourt County, Virginia, where entered service in 1781; applied for Pension 1843 in White County, Illinois & Pension Application rejected, less than 6 months of service; died 6/30/1846; married 6/1/1812 to Arkada who resided age 58 in White County, Illinois, 1846. F-R4635, R1195.

Joel Harrell, born ca 1748 [other sources have 1758] Bertie Co., N.C., died 30 June 1846 White Co., IL; married three times. Which wife was parent of which child is not known. Married 1st to Polly Foster, married 2nd to Betsey Shoulders; married 3rd on 1 June 1812 to Arcadia Smith, born ca 1795, died ca 1878.

[Illinois, White County]
On this 3rd day of April 1843 personally appeared in open court before the Circuit Court of White County State of Illinois now sitting, Joel Harrell a resident of the said County of White & State aforesaid – Aged eighty-five years (nearly) who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th, 1832.
That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated. He resided in Martin County North Carolina when he volunteered to serve a tour of three months, and did serve under Captain Mays, his Lieutenant was named then Whitley, the particular date of the service he cannot distinctly state nor can he recollect the names of his field officers, he was marched on to the Pedee River in South Carolina was taken sick during the time and was sent to the hospital at Salisbury. His three months service expired while he was in the hospital. He remained there for some 3 or 4 weeks after discharged before he could be moved. After his recovery he removed to the State of Virginia, into Botetort [sic, Botetourt] County, where he was drafted to serve a three months tour, and served under Captain Yallerly1 [?] – Hugh Allen [Hugh "Big Mouth" Allen] was his Lieutenant and Lockard [probably Patrick Lockhart] was the name of the Major, this was about the month of August 1781 – he was marched from Botetourt County to Little York and was at the taking of Corn Wallis [Cornwallis].
After the surrender of Cornwallis the Army was marched back towards home, and after passing Richmond at the forks of the road where one went to Winchester and the other of James River his company was discharged just ten days before the expiration of the three months. He was then two hundred miles or more from his home in Botetourt County – he states as the reason why his application for a pension has been thus long delayed – that he was informed by a lawyer that as the Terms of his service was less than 10 days than 6 months that it would be unnecessary to make application. But he is induced now to hope that his government will allow him for his travel of 200 miles home and grant him a pension (he served as a private both tours)
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the Pension roll of the agency of any State whatever.

1st: Where and in what year were you born?
Ans. I was born in the year 1758 in Bertie County North Carolina.
2nd: Have you any record of your age and if so where is it?
Ans. The record of my age has been accidentally burnt.
3rd: Where were you living when called into service: where have you lived since the
Revolutionary War and where do you now live?
Ans. In Martin County North Carolina and in Botetourt County Virginia – since the revolutionary war I have lived in Kentucky & Illinois all the time.
4th: How were you called into service; were you drafted; did you volunteer or were you a substitute, and if in substitute, for whom?
Ans. The first Tour I volunteered – on the 2nd I was drafted.
5th: State the names of some of the regular officers who were with the troops when you served, such Continental and militia regiments as you can recollect and the general circumstances of your service.
Ans. I can't recollect any of the General officers except General Washington & Major Campbell
6th: Did you ever receive a discharge from the service, and if so, by whom was it given and what has become of it?
Ans. I received discharges from my Captains and they were burnt in the house when the Bible containing them & the record of my age was burnt.
7th: State the names of persons to whom you are known in your present neighborhood and who can testify as to your character for veracity and their belief in your services as a soldier in the revolution.
